This is not an offer or a quote. It assumes monthly repayments in arrears, interest calculated monthly on the reducing balance, and no fees. Real loans differ. Check the lender’s documents and comparison rate.

How the maths works

The calculator uses the standard instalment formula. With a balloon, the amount you borrow is reduced by the present value of the balloon before the repayment is worked out, so the repayments cover the interest and part of the principal, leaving the balloon to pay at the end.

Repayment = (P − B ÷ (1 + r)n) × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n)

Try it: $30,000 at 8% over 5 years gives $608.29 a month and $6,497.51 in interest. Now add a $10,000 balloon and watch the repayment fall while the interest grows. Read more in the comparison rate guide, or start an enquiry to see real options.
